SCSS is the "Gold Standard" for retirement income in India. It offers a higher yield than most bank FDs with sovereign safety.

  • 1

Quarterly Certainty: Unlike FD where interest can be yearly, SCSS forces a quarterly income stream which is better for budget planning.

  • 2

Double the Benefit: A couple can invest up to ₹60 Lakh (₹30L each) in separate accounts to shield a larger corpus.

TDS Mitigation

Seniors have an exemption limit of ₹50,000 on interest income. Submit Form 15H at the beginning of the FY if your total income is below the tax threshold.

Liquidity Note

While it has a 5-year lock-in, you can close it after 1 year by paying a small penalty (1% - 1.5%), making it more liquid than most long-term bonds.

How Does the SCSS Calculator Work?

Unlike the PPF or EPF which feature compound interest, SCSS operates strictly on Simple Interest calculated and paid out every quarter. Therefore, your principal amount deposited on Day 1 remains untouched and is returned to you upon maturity (after 5 years).

Quarterly Interest = (P × R) / (100 × 4)

Where:

  • P = Principal deposit (Max ₹30L)
  • R = Annual Interest Rate (Currently 8.2%)
  • Example: (15,00,000 × 8.2) / 400 = ₹30,750 per quarter
  • Quarterly Payouts: Interest is strictly credited on the 1st of April, July, October, and January.
  • No Compounding: Unclaimed interest does not earn further interest.
  • Maximum Limit: An individual can deposit a maximum of ₹30 Lakhs (doubled recently from ₹15 Lakhs).
  • Taxation: While the deposit qualifies for an ₹1.5L deduction under Section 80C, the interest earned is fully taxable as per your slab rate.

Example: ₹30 Lakh Maximum Deposit

Mr. Sharma recently retired and received his PF/Gratuity corpus. He decides to maximize his risk-free returns by depositing the full limit of ₹30 Lakhs into an SCSS account at the current 8.2% rate.

• Annual Interest = ₹2,46,000
Quarterly Payout = ₹61,500
• Total Interest Over 5 Years = ₹12,30,000

For 5 straight years, Mr. Sharma will receive an auto-credited 'pension' of ₹61,500 every 3 months. At the end of the 5th year, his original ₹30 Lakhs is returned in full.
